Arbitration Incubation: Ideas from the Next Generation

As a part of our commitment to encourage diversity and inclusion, and in pursuit of the discovery and showcase of new arbitration talent, ACICA and Ciarb Australia are pleased to offer two speaking spots at the upcoming ACICA & Ciarb Australia International Arbitration Conference to emerging practitioners by expression of interest.  The two panels on which speaking spots are being offered are:

  1. Investor-State Dispute – choose your own adventure?
  2. What do you have to Prove? Practicalities of Evidence in International Arbitration

We invite proposals to be submitted by 28 June 2024.

All proposals must:

  • Identify the panel to which the author proposes to speak [1].
  • Outline the topic/theme within the panel subject area that the author would propose to address if chosen to speak on the relevant panel [2].
  • Be the author’s own original work, the substance of which is unpublished [3].
  • Be submitted in a word document not exceeding 500 to 800 words.
  • Clearly identify in the covering email the author’s nationality/nationalities, age (applicants must be under 45 years of age [4]), location, affiliation, and qualifications.
  • Be submitted by email to secretariat@acica.org.au.

Each proposal will be reviewed by a review committee consisting of members from both the ACICA45 Steering Committee and CIArb Young Member Group (Australia branch). The review committee will submit a shortlist of names to the Conference Organising Committee to select the two panelists. The selection results will be announced by the end of July 2024. Panelists are expected to bear their own travel expenses but will receive a full waiver of the conference fee. Panelists selected must be prepared to speak for up to ten minutes on their topic at the conference, noting that it will be for the panel as whole to determine the structure of a particular session.

[1] Separate proposals for both panels may be submitted for consideration.

[2] Applicants must be prepared to speak more broadly on the relevant topic.

[3] The two proposals selected for presentation must not published (or included in any publication) until after 14 October 2024.

[4] The review committee retains a discretion to consider proposals from applicants older than 45 years of age as at 14 October 2024 if they can conclusively demonstrate less than 5 years’ practice in arbitration. Please contact secretariat@acica.org.au in advance of making a submission to confirm eligibility.
